When we had God we could lay our pain at his feet and say

“Why? Where was my sin? I commend it to your terrible mercy”

And when we had War we could lay it before his horses and say

“Let cannons drive it into the earth and strip it of its magnitude. Let shells burst above it and rend the silence”

And when we had Family we could place it on the hearth and say

“Everyone take a piece. Help me carry it. Let us break bread and fill the maw”

But now we have The Self and who can regard, repent or raze from behind scaled eyes? Cold copper runs rails to the echo chamber. Let each man bury his dead.
